In response to Nicola Sturgeon’s proposals for a second referendum, Robin Harper, the former leader of the Scottish Greens, and the chair of Our Scottish Future’s Environment Commission, said:
“We would be much better off talking about how to improve the performance of the UK through an all encompassing refresh of how our democracy works, and how we can improve it to serve all four UK administrations.”
“There is so much more that can be done: reform of the House of Lords, specialist skills education, prison reform, strengthening of local democracy, new ways of supporting community democracy, greater powers of fund raising for city and Local authorities and mayoralties.”
“There are so many improvements we could be discussing now in cross party conversations . What about replacing a tedious repetition of all the arguments that we have found ourselves trapped with a conversation about how to make what we have work more to our advantage?”
